I Just Have to Share ...

Just days before this show I was out with a few girlfriends and half of brunch was spent with three of us trying to convince the fourth of the merits of Prince. She says she Likes Purple Rain but everything else about him is annoying.....

Blasphemy I say!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Prince puts on the best show you will see in your life. And you don't have to be a huge fan: you know enough of his music, he has a big enough presence in pop culture that anyone can have a connection

This is the third time I've seen this man live, and I really could go to every other performance he is doing here and not get tired of it. Prince is a true performer. He does not disappoint at all.

I was a little worried because of the no cussing, no dirty stuff mind set he is in since becoming a JW.... plus the Forum isn't known for its acoustics... but the sound was great and Prince still performs enough of his hits to satisfy. Kiss, I Would Die 4 U, Break It Down, A Hole in Your Head, Cream and many more are still on his play list.

He's been at this for over 30 years and he still shows up with the same exuberance we saw in Purple Rain (the movie). I have been literally laughing at the youngsters across town at Staples who went to see Little Wayne and the Young Money crew. I know they can't possibly hold a candle to Prince.

Stimulate Who?

As I drive from one place to another and see construction projects with signs that say "your stimulus dollars at work" it makes me wonder just HOW it is supposed to work.

Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of friends who do benefit directly from these projects, but those friends have always done that sort of work. However, I'm a 5-foot 2-inch female who just graduated with a journalism degree, teaches dance part-time and likes to think of herself as a performer. I have a 10-year-old daughter who needs food, clothing, activities to get into and a roof over her head.

I am in no way, shape or form inclined or trained to build anything. It would probably take months of training to get me to even be able to facilitate a construction company as a receptionist or anything close. So how am I benefiting from those stimulus dollars?

Why didn't they just break each of us off a check? that would have gone directly into the economy in a way that the so-called free market should work. I would have got my car work done that is still desperately needed and I still can not afford. that would have kept the body shop owner from laying off that extra mechanic. That mechanic would have been able to keep up the payments on his home and the bank he got his loan from would have had one less defaulted mortgage and maybe been able to stay solvent.

It makes sense to me.... does it make sense to you?

WHERE IS THE MMS NOW?

I read a heartbreaking article in LA Times yesterday. Their Column One June 17th headline was "Death by Fire in the Gulf" and explained in the so-called burn boxes being used to get rid of all the oil. There is a bit of short-sightedness to this plan.

Question: Isn't the reason for containing and cleaning up the oil spill to preserve the flora and fauna in the gulf?

If that's the case, and we know it is, then why are they doing a clean up that is so counteractive to the purpose? If that is the case, then why aren't government officials, clean-up commissions and BP CEO's communicating with marine biologists to do recover sea turtles, birds and other wildlife before they are boiled or burned alive?

That said, let's look at the plan for a worst case scenario that BP officials, along with other "Big Oil" officials, had in place. First of all, it was apparently minimal, and second, as for saving wildlife, it details a plan for walruses and sea lions. I'm sure we've all heard, if you didn't know already, that walruses and sea lions do not live in the Gulf Coast region.

Investigations and hearings have begun in to see if BP Oil was grossly negligent in their drilling practices.

We should all know the answer to that.

However, should all of the blame really go to BP or any other corporation for that matter? About a year and a half or so ago, an investigation revealed corruption in the
Mineral Management Services
. The short-term memory of this country has truly shown up here. In this investigation we heard of the MMS basically partying it up with the oil companies rather than carrying out the oh so important job of oversight. The MMS is in charge of making sure that drilling and mining are done safely and with minimal risk. They are the ones who would have approved the said "emergency plan" that listed protecting animals that don't even live in the region as a priority for protection.

Can we really blame BP for taking advantage of such a lax system? Most people would, right...

Look at what this says for our oversight committees, all of them. The MMS allowed these companies to get away with out any kind of research. So now, what exactly happens with these hearings?

The oil spill in the gulf is not a good thing. A couple of weeks ago, the day after the explosion, the Soapbox focused on water. This was before there were any signs of a leak. Now, 2 weeks later, we are looking at extensive damage in our gulf coast region. This is devastating for that area. Please don’t forget New Orleans is barely recovering from Hurricane Katrina.

The pipe is has been leaking at 5,000 barrels a day. This is what we are hearing… let me put that in context for you because most people don’t know how much a barrel is.

A barrel is 42 gallons. 5,000 barrels is 210 thousand gallons. This is awful.
Last week Thursday, April 29, President Obama said he would use every resource to get the mess cleaned up.

The latest news, however is that The amount of oil pumping into the Gulf is far more than 5,000 barrels, or 210,000 gallons. The word is that it's like five times that.

In order to remedy the mess, BP tried placing an oil containment box over the leak in hopes that this will stop the spill. Which didn't work.

The spill started just a month after President Obama announced plans to open up more off-shore drilling. Come to think of it, the mine explosion in West Virginia that killed 25 people happened just a week after Obama’s announcement.
It’s as if Mother nature said, Oh Hell no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another point on this oil spill deal. We are going to pay for this. The gas prices will go up, shrimp prices will go up. Oyster prices and whatever else we get out of that sea will go up. Is this really fair? Why should we be paying for BP’s business risks? If you invest in say, selling corn out of a wagon and you trip and tip the whole wagon over, you have now lost all your money and your product.

A beautiful Display of Love and Tolerance

Yesterday (02/19/10) I got a glimpse of what the upcoming generation has to offer; it was beautiful, powerful and inspiring. The students at Long Beach's Wilson Classical High showed a beautiful display of love and tolerance in the face of hate and bigotry.

The fringe hate group Westboro Baptist Church has planned a picketing tour of Long Beach and its surrounding areas. They have come all the way from Topeka Kansas to spread the word, and the word is "God hates everyone." God hates gays. God hates Jews. God hates reggae.

They kicked it off with a stop at Wilson Classical High just as students were getting out of school. The students came out, guns blazing, figuratively of course.
The "church" was completely unprepared for the 1,500 to 2,000 students, they only had only about 20 people with them. Their message of hate was completely drowned out by student's peaceful, albeit, boisterous counter-protest. They were armed with signs, voices and t-shirts all raised in the name of human equality.

Westboro Baptist, however seems a bit peeved. They added the Long Beach Police Department to their list of picket stops, saying on their website that they were not pleased with the response of the police. Perhaps they wanted to see them beat down the "angry rebel students" for effectively shutting them up. This was the response posted:

"The angry rebel students of Wilson Classical High School out-manned the sissies in uniform from the Long Beach Police Department, and they love to have it so! There were 2000+ live-for-your-lust brats and their God-hating parents / teachers surrounding our seven little lambs, while the LBPD yucked it up. You have taught your children to rebel against their maker, and so your children are lawless brutes - they make a nice pairing for lawless cops who have broken their oaths, and spit in the face of their maker. What more would we expect from a state that has, time and time again, led this nation in calling clean that which God has called unclean! The laws of God are meaningless to you, so why be obedient to the laws of man? Sounds like ancient Sodom - only worse! We have Sodom as an example of how NOT to be! The God who created this nation, and every last one of your raggedy hides will soon give an answer for your arrogant, proud sinning. We pray for California to be cast into the ocean ANY DAY NOW!"
Their hate-full website

I am especially proud of the faculty at Wilson. They knew this was coming and decided use it as a lesson in applied civics. They prepared the students with by letting then know the one wonderful right we have as citizens of the U.S. is that of free speech. They told them this means everyone, even the hateful, can speak their minds... and told the students they have this right as well.

With that information and support the students of Wilson High were able to conduct themselves without incident. It could have been different, faculty could have chosen to ignore it or to simply tell the what not to do, which we all know doesn't work with teens. If the adults in their lives had not stepped up and taken charged at least one of those kids would have ended up in trouble.

This video is from the LB Post. They say the first half comes from them, the second from a member of WBC.

I think I know where I want my daughter to go to high school.

SCHOOLS OVER PRISONS

SCHWARZENEGGER'S STATE OF THE STATE SPEECH- JANUARY 6, 2010

ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER GAVE A HAPHAZARD-SOUNDING STATE-OF-THE-STATE SPEECH. IT BEGAN WITH AN AWKWARD LITTLE FABLE COMPARING CALIFORNIA’S LEGISLATORS TO HIS HOUSEHOLD PETS; A MINIATURE PONY AND A POT-BELLIED PIG.

HE SAID THE TWO HAVE WORKED TOGETHER ON CREATING A SYSTEM OF GETTING FOOD OUT OF A CONTAINER AND THAT THE STATE’S LAWMAKERS DID THE SAME LAST YEAR IN ORDER TO CLOSE THE HUGE BUDGET GAP.

PERSONALLY, GIVEN ANALOGY, THE PONY AND THE PIG SEEM TO HAVE A BETTER SYSTEM.

HOWEVER, OUR GOVERNOR MADE A FEW POIGNANT STATEMENTS. I’LL START WITH THE GOOD NEWS; HE PROMISED HE WILL PROTECT EDUCATION OVER PRISONS. WHAT A RELIEF. HE RECOGNIZED THAT THE STATE SPENDS 45% MORE ON “PRISON UNIFORMS THAN ON CAPS AND GOWNS.” HOW HE PLANS ON DOING THIS IS A LITTLE SHADY. HE SPOKE OF BETTER MANAGING THE PRISON SYSTEM, AND TURNING TO PRIVATELY RUN PRISONS, BUT NOT SO MUCH ABOUT CLOSING THEM OR DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THE HIGH POPULATIONS WITHIN THEM.

HE ALSO VAGUELY SPOKE A BIT ON THE IMPROVEMENTS THE STATE IS MAKING TO IMPROVE CONDITIONS WITH IN THE SCHOOLS. THAT PARENTS CAN “FREE THEIR CHILDREN FROM DESTRUCTIVE SCHOOLS”, GET RID OF INCOMPETENT PRINCIPLES AND THE ABILITY TO CONNECT STUDENTS PERFORMANCE TO THE TEACHER’S PERFORMANCE.

WHAT HE DID NOT DIRECTLY SAY WAS THAT WE WOULD SPEND MORE ON EDUCATION. IT SOUNDED A BIT TO ME LIKE WE WOULD CORRECT THE RATIO OF MONEY SPENT. GOING FORWARD, HOWEVER, I’M GOING TO HOPE THAT THIS IS IMPLIED. I’M GOING TO ASSUME THAT ‘PRIORITIES’, HIS CHOSEN FOCUS WORD FOR 2010, MEANS THAT THE SAVINGS ON PRISONS WILL BE DIRECTLY DEPOSITED INTO THE EDUCATION FUND……
AMBITIOUS THINKING, I KNOW, BUT ONE CAN WISH.

THE NEXT POINT OF HIS SPEECH I FOUND TELLING WAS HIS TAXES/BUDGET REFORM PROPOSALS.

IT’S NOT THAT WE DON’T NEED TO REFORM THE TAXES…. YES, IT IS UNREALISTIC TO GO ON BELIEVING THAT THE 144,000 TAXPAYERS, AS HE POINTS OUT, CAN CARRY 38 MILLION CALIFORNIANS.

HOWEVER… SPOKEN LIKE A TRUE REPUBLICAN, HE SAYS “WE SIMPLY CANNOT WAIT FOR THE RICH TO BOUNCE BACK”.
HIS TAX PLAN WAS APPROVED BY, HE BOASTS, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL AND FORMER DEMOCRATIC, CALIFORNIAN POLITICIAN WILLIE BROWN.
READING BETWEEN THE LINES, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL FOCUSES ON CORPORATE INTERESTS, THE FAKE PEOPLE.
AND WILLIE BROWN, LAST YEAR WAS DEFENDING GENERAL CONTRACTOR MONICA UNG, WHO WAS ARRAIGNED IN AUGUST 2009 FOR DOZENS OF FELONY FRAUD CHARGES INCLUDING FLAUNTING LABOR LAWS AND DEFRAUDING IMMIGRANT CONSTRUCTION WORKERS OF THEIR WAGES.
THIS SHOULD BE INDICATIVE OF WHAT KIND OF TAX PROPOSAL THIS REALLY IS. READ MORE

IF THE 144,000 TAXPAYERS THE GOVERNATOR SPOKE OF WERE INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES, REAL PEOPLE LIKE ME AND YOU, I WOULD COMPLETELY AGREE WITH HIM, EVEN SMALL BUSINESS. THE DISCONNECT HERE IS THAT HE IS ALSO SPEAKING OF CORPORATIONS AND BIG BUSINESS.

THE PEOPLE WITH NO PULSE; WHOSE SKIN IS CONCRETE AND BONES ARE METAL AND WHO EAT REAL PEOPLE, REAL TAXPAYERS FOR DINNER.

I DIGRESS, I AGREE THAT WE HAVE TO REFORM TAXES. CALIFORNIANS ARE QUITE DISILLUSIONED WHEN IT COMES TO FINANCES. YOU SEE IT EVERYDAY ON THE STREET. PEOPLE DRIVING AROUND IN CARS THEY CAN’T AFFORD, WEARING EXPENSIVE CLOTHES AND GUCCI GLASSES WITH BOTOX ALL IN THEIR FOREHEADS, ALL THE WHILE WRITING IT OFF. AS AN EXPENSE BECAUSE YOU ARE AN ASPIRING MODEL… YOU DID ONE PHOTO SHOOT ON A TRADE FOR PICS ARRANGEMENT AND IN THE MEAN TIME HAVE AN UNDER-THE-TABLE PERSONAL ASSISTANT JOB THAT PAYS 3500 DOLLARS A MONTH. JUST AS AN EXAMPLE. BUT WE REAL PEOPLE WOULDN’T HAVE TO THAT IF THE FAKE PEOPLE , AGAIN CORPORATIONS AND BIG BUSINESSES, WERE REQUIRED TO PAY US A LIVING WAGE AND WEREN’T ABLE TO CUT SO MANY TAX CORNERS THEMSELVES.
